you see, when I see this, I think of classical feminism. which is cis women only.

which just makes me wonder what proportion of pro-gay rights/general equality would go so far as to

    • not use trans slurs
    • not be cissexist
    • actually think trans people are equal to cis people
    • be erasing

because I’ve seen way too many ‘progressive’ people do this to other minorities

which makes me wonder - how many allies do I actually have?

reblog for excellent commentary and good questions.

Agreed. Every time I see any feminist ‘love your vagina/uterus/period/etc’ type stuff, I get really fucking uncomfortable, because it’s so damn erasing to women who don’t have those things, or women who do, but are perfectly happy not being hella enthusiastic about those parts, or people who have those parts, but aren’t women.

By all means, love your body, if you can. But please, stop equating body parts with gender and gendered movements, because you’re just throwing a hell of a lot of people under the bus in the process.

Not saying any part of the above discussion is invalid or irrelevant, but I am curious as to how a picture of vagina cupcakes turned into a discussion on how all feminists hate trans* people by being proud of themselves and their bodies.

I ‘m not entirely sure how I came to it, but it was probably something along the lines of ‘vagina cupcakes -> love your vagina (as a feminist movement) -> erasure for people with vaginas who do not ID as female, and erasure for non/pre-op trans women.’

It’s a really tough line to walk, because on the one hand (the “classical feminist” hand, if you will), we’re taught to be ashamed of our femininity, which in the minds of many is inextricably linked to vaginas, uteruses, etc. Those body parts are, by virtue of being cis female, part of the marginalization that feminism seeks to correct. But on the other hand, trans women are marginalized in a completely different and equally harmful way for not fitting into this narrow view of gender and womanness! So I think that it’s up to everyone to kind of have a simultaneous narrative that says that having vaginas, uteruses, etc. does not make you an inferior human being, and that not having them does not make you an inferior woman.

    Thoughts?

Not to be a buzzkill or to seem like I don’t care about trans people (who I care about immensely), but this is a picture of vag cupcakes. It’s meant to get a laugh. Or that’s how I read it.

Not to be a buzzkill, but it seems you’ve managed to completely ignore the larger picture.

Btw, there’s a forest beyond these trees. Can’t see them? Not my fault, you didn’t bother to read anything above.

I made these cakes. I have a vagina and the friends I made them with also have vaginas so we made them as a celebration of that. I am not cis so its not really a celebration of womanhood or anything like that. We made vaginas because we have vaginas, if we had penises we would have made them. Only a penis perhaps wouldnt fit so nicely on a cake.
